222 E - 1988 to 1993
Introduced in 1988 as the replacement/upgrade for the Biturbo E, the 222 E was facelifted by the now free-lance Marcello Gandini with a rounder nose, new wing mirrors and a rear spoiler. All these modifications helped improve the aerodynamics of the car. Externally, only the front fog lights distinguished it from the 222.
The 222 name indicated the 2 door body style, 2-litre engine displacement and 2nd step of the Biturbo evolution. As always the E was synonymous with Export model, hence the 2.8-litre engine instead of the 2.0-litre available for the Italian market.
The interior was dressed mostly in leather and briarwood trim, seats were leather as standard. The ergonomics had been revised, and the steering column was fully adjustable. Included in the base spec were the automatic air-conditioning system and central locking. The rear boot lid could be opened electrically from a switch on the dashboard, while the classic Maserati central watch now had its own full illumination.
