Biturbo E - 1983 to 1985 (1st series only)
Introduced in March 1983, the Biturbo E was created for the export markets (hence the "E"), with a 2.5-litre engine. The 2.0-litre engine was instead intended for the home market, for Italian laws imposed very heavy taxes on cars with engines of greater displacement.
Other than the modifications linked to the engine upgrade, the Biturbo E was similar to the Biturbo. Overall length was slightly longer by way of deeper American-spec bumpers. Period brochures claimed that the power and the torque of the 2.5-litre Maserati Biturbo engine could be compared to those of a 3.5-litre normally aspirated engine. 4577 units were produced of the 1st and 2nd series combined.
