Racing - 1991 to 1992
The Racing was revealed to the press in December 1990 and was introduced on the market already by March of the following year. It was essentially a variant of the 2.24v. with a higher power output, and was meant as an intermediate model underneath the more aggressive Shamal. The Trident's engineers had sought to obtain plenty of torque already from lower revs (37,3 kgm at 3500 rpm), and coupled the engine to a new Getrag gearbox. Suspensions were also upgraded with the adoption of the electronically controlled active system and 4-position damping settings.
Despite the Racing moniker, Maserati elected to retain a very refined rather than Spartan interior. The usual mix of wood and leather trim formed the standard spec, as did the fitting of climate control. In just two years of existence, 230 cars were assembled and are now among the most sought after models of the Biturbo line.
