Tipo 4CLT/48 - 1948-1949
The most innovative aspect of the 4CLT/48 was that it boasted a tubular chassis rather than a box-section one. The aim was to improve torsional stiffness which in turn meant the chassis could corner faster. The engine boasted twin-stage supercharging with two front-mounted superchargers, and developed an impressive 270 bhp which, as a result of modifications to the cylinder head made by Professor Speluzzi of the Scuderia Milan team in 1949 and the adoption of a bigger capacity supercharger, reached nearly 330.
The car made its debut at the San Remo Grand Prix of 1948, in which the Scuderia Ambrosiana team lined up two cars driven by Ascari and Villoresi. They went on to take first and second, and from that moment forward the car was also known by its nickname, the San Remo. In 1949, it was driven to victory by top drivers such as Fangio, Farina and Bira. The single-seater remained competitive until 1950.
