Tipo 4CM 1100 - 1932 to 1937
The first Maserati single-seater's engineering was derived from that of the 4CTR, yet had been quite considerably and cleverly developed into something much more sophisticated. It also boasted hydraulic brakes with twin pumps and piping which were hugely reliable and much easier to calibrate than the old steel cable system.
The 4CM came third in the 1500 class (first in the 1100 class) in the 1932 Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and went on to achieve brilliant results in other races. A special lightweight version, which weighed just 470 kg, was used by Giuseppe Furmanik to set a whole plethora of class records. Then, in 1936, it was further lightened to a mere 440 kg, while its power was also increased to a not inconsiderable 145 bhp at 6,500 rpm. The last version of the 4CM was produced in 1937 and sported a chassis and bodywork very similar to the 6CM's.
