4CM 2000 - 1933
Just one of this car was ever built. Completed in 1933, it had a new 4-cylinder engine that offered considerable torque well distributed throughout the rev range. The steering box was mounted on the side of the engine and the driver's seat was thus slightly off-set. The 4CM 2000 made its debut in the Coppa Ciano in 1933 with Giuseppe Campari at the wheel. He made the very most of its excellent road-holding and acceleration, but the car was not so lucky in Nice. It was then sold to Ippolito Berrone who raced it successfully in several minor European events.
It is now on display in the Montague Museum in Beaulieu. There have been many rumours of the existence of a second 4 CM 2000, and the Maserati archives do indicate that another one was built, albeit with a 2,500 cc engine.
