300S
The 300S proved very successful in international sports car events. It won the 1000 km races at the Nürburgring in 1956 (with Moss, Behra, Taruffi and Schell) and Buenos Aires in Argentina (with Moss and Menditeguy). Other major victories included the 1956 Venezuelan Grand Prix, the Australian Tourist Trophy and the Nassau Trophy (all driven by Moss). Fangio won the 1957 Cuban, Sao Paolo and Lisbon Grands Prix, and Carroll Shelby won at Palm Springs in the US.
The big 6-cylinder returned to a long-stroke design and was basically a 3-litre version of the 250F Grand Prix car engine installed in a tubular chassis with single-seater derived suspension. A 5-speed gearbox and larger front brake drums from the 450S were used on works cars in 1957. The 300S boasted excellent handling and was greatly appreciated by those who raced it hard enough.
26 cars were made, plus four spare engines. The first three cars were consigned to US driver/team owner Briggs Swift Cunningham.
