A6GCS/53
The A6GCS/53 saw a return to twin overhead camshafts with the alloy-block engine from the A6GCM Formula 2 single-seater. This 2-litre was the first Maserati engine with a short-stroke design, willing to rev as high as 7,300 rpm, resulting in an output of 170 bhp. The adoption of twin ignition was another first for a Maserati sports car. Chassis-wise it was the same as the previous single-cam model, but featured a new all-enveloping body by factory coachbuilder Fantuzzi.
Luigi Musso drove the A6GCS/53 to victory in the Italian 2-litre sports championships of 1953 and 1954 as well as the 1954 Targa Florio and Giro di Sicilia. Second place in the 1955 season went to Maria Teresa de Filippis of Naples. At international level, Musso and Mantovani won the 1954 Irish Tourist Trophy, while the Swiss driver, Benoit Musy, won at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Emanuel Toulo de Graffenried at Interlagos in Argentina.
54 cars plus four spare engines were made. Vignale, Frua and Scaglietti (re-)bodied one-off roadsters, while Pinin Farina coach-built four stunning berlinetta coupés, all of which survive. Nine Sport 2000s were exported to the USA.
