Tipo 64
The Tipo 64 was effectively a revised Tipo 63 with V12-engine, new and highly complex de Dion rear suspension and magnesium one-piece wheels. The unique one-off body was penned by former Bertone stylist Franco Scaglione and built by Gentilini and Allegretti for the Scuderia Serenissima of Venice. In the 1962 Targa Florio, where it was driven by Carlo Abate and Colin Davis, it retired with steering problems. At Sebring in Florida Nino Vaccarella retired with a broken gearbox. At the Nürburging Davis was running fourth when he collided while passing a slower competitor.
A second Tipo 64 evolved from a Tipo 63 that the Cunningham team had crashed at Laguna Seca at the end of October 1961. It was sent to Modena, rebuilt and tested at Monza in February 1962 by Walt Hansgen, Bruce McLaren and Roger Penske. Cunningham's Tipo 64 retired at Sebring in 1962 with broken rear suspension and was later rebuilt by Alfred Momo with a 427 cubic inch Ford V8.
