Tipo V5

The Tipo V5 was less fortunate than the V4. The engine was created using two 26M-engines coupled together in a common crankcase and produced between 330 and 360 bhp from 4.9 litres. The car had a dry weight of 1,050 kg and a top speed of around 260 to 270 km/h (161.5 to 168 mph).

Luigi Fagioli won the 1932 Grand Prix of Rome with the V5 and came second at Monza and sixth at Marseille. At the Montlhéry speed-bowl to the south of Paris in December 1932, Amedeo Ruggeri crashed fatally while attempting a new One Hour Record. The V5 was rebuilt with hydraulic brakes for the 1934 Tripoli Grand Prix in Northern Africa; Piero Taruffi led the race, crashed and escaped unhurt, but the Maserati V5 was damaged beyond repair.

Apart from the one-off V5 sports-racer, Maserati built two V16 engines to power the world record speed boat of Count Theo Rossi di Montelera (of Martini e Rossi fame).
